COLLECTIONS: Considering a Young Man

Wasserman Works presents Considering a Young Man – an exhibition by Tony Whitfield and Whitfield CoLabs on view June 29 - August 10, 2024.

In Considering A Young Man, multidisciplinary artist and designer Tony Whitfield introduces himself to Detroit. His Whitfield CoLabs, LLC folds a collaborative, curatorial practice into his first solo exhibition since relocating from New York City in 2020.

His works in this exhibition explore experiences ranging from the influences of Brown v. Board of Education to the burgeoning of the AIDS epidemic, from his childhood in Philadelphia, through his years as a curator at New York’s Just Above Midtown–the landmark arts organization that forged groundbreaking relationships to the art market for Black artists working with a broad range of realist traditions. Forty years later, Whitfield reflects upon the experiential underpinnings of his recent practice from his perspective as a mature, queer, Black man in dialogue with the world he inhabits.
