Glyphs 01 - 03

This limited set of Matter Design’s seminal project ‘Grayson Play-Lab’ pivots creative play-things into refined ceremonial staffs. Glyphs conjure the curious relationship between utility and ceremony, falling in line with a deep history of transforming tools into ritual objects. Reminiscent of a type-set, each is unique, but share properties with their neighbors. They share dimensions and forms that suggest a usefulness without overtly prescribing singular functions.

These works are a collaboration between Brandon Clifford and Jo Lobdell of Matter Design, an interdisciplinary art practice dedicated to shifting contemporary behaviors. Matter Design illustrates alternatives to default contemporary practices by unearthing mindsets from prehistory. Matter Design’s embrace of spectacle and mystery defines the uniquely playful and whimsical work.
