ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Taylor Jenkins (b. 1999) is a fiber based artist who makes work about shared familial experiences rooted in Black womanhood. She gained an appreciation for craft and the value of the handmade primarily from her maternal grandmother who taught her to sew from a young age. She employs the traditional practices of natural dyeing, weaving, hand embroidery, and sewing to explore the common threads of shared struggle, humanity, and resilience.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Growing up, the most important relationship I had was with my mother —and that sentiment continues to this day. She showed me how to navigate the world as a Black woman, often unseen, overlooked, or misinterpreted. Imbued within my textile work are instances of hardship, healing, and intense joy. The process of sewing allows me to retrace memories and relationships from a new perspective.

Please note: All artworks will remain on display through June 30th after which purchased works will be available for pick up at BasBlue - 110 East Ferry Street, Detroit. (unless alternate arrangements have been made). For questions contact: info@basblueus.com
