Maritza Caneca (b. born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Caneca began her career as a visual artist in the 1980’s as a cinematographer and now spends her time between Rio de Janeiro and Miami. She has shown her work all over the world, including an exhibition of her Pool Series curated by Vanda Klabin at Paco Imperial Exhibition during the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

This work is part of an ongoing series of pool photographs inspired by a visit to Caneca’s grandparents’ hacienda for the first time in over 30 years. She was taken aback to find this beloved space completely drained, surrounded, and taken over by overgrown plants. It had become an empty shell of the bygone days of joy and glamor that she had once shared with her family, but she realized this emptiness was not entirely a void because it was filled with memories and was moved by the power of these unexpected yet welcomed sensations.

ABOUT WASSERMAN PROJECTS

Wasserman Projects is a contemporary art space, established in 2012 and housed in a former firehouse in Detroit’s historic Eastern Market since 2015. Wasserman Projects works with artists from across disciplines and around the world to present exhibitions and performances that will spark a discourse on art, but also cultural, social, or political issues, which are particularly active and timely in Detroit. Guided by a spirit of collaboration, Wasserman Projects seeks to facilitate meaningful visual and performing arts experiences, promote creative and economic growth in our community, and help artists bring to fruition new projects that may not otherwise be possible.
