There is a long, and sometimes controversial, history of appropriated imagery in the art world. Think of the work of Robert Rauschenberg or Bob Heineken. But that work was manipulated into being by those artists. My series, Every Thing Changes, relies more on John Cage for its inspiration. It is the result of a happy accident. I realized one day that looking through a newspaper page instead of at the page let me discover a whole world of new images created by the completely unintentional, random and accidental combination of two photographs printed back to back. Unless that combination is recorded it is completely evanescent, because by the next day that newspaper is in recycle. So, every day since, I have saved the paper to look through for the images that I find and use to produce the prints for this work. Every Thing Changes is a series of prints that has demanded of me the discipline of looking closely at something, then surrendering control to revel in the accident of discovery.

Over the course of a 40 plus year career, Donald Dietz's work has been included in numerous gallery, museum and institutional exhibits in the US and in Europe, and has been collected publicly and privately.

ABOUT WASSERMAN PROJECTS

Wasserman Projects is a contemporary art space, established in 2012 and housed in a former firehouse in Detroit’s historic Eastern Market since 2015. Wasserman Projects works with artists from across disciplines and around the world to present exhibitions and performances that will spark a discourse on art, but also cultural, social, or political issues, which are particularly active and timely in Detroit. Guided by a spirit of collaboration, Wasserman Projects seeks to facilitate meaningful visual and performing arts experiences, promote creative and economic growth in our community, and help artists bring to fruition new projects that may not otherwise be possible.
