Marie Herwald Hermann (born 1979, Copenhagen, Denmark) lives and works in Chicago. She received her BFA from the University of Westminster in 2003 before managing Edmund de Waal’s studio from 2003-2007 in London and receiving her MFA from London’s Royal College of Art in 2008. The artist serves as an Assistant Professor and Chair of the Ceramics Department at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Solo exhibitions include And the Walls Became the World All Around, Reyes | Finn, Detroit, MI; Bit by bit above the edge of things, Paris London Hong Kong, Chicago, IL; 99 cents, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, MI; Another Look at Detroit, Marianne Boesky Gallery in collaboration with Marlborough Chelsea, New York. Hermann was awarded the 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowships, the Danish Art Foundation 3-year grant in 2014 and 2009, the Annie and Otto Johs Detlefs’ grant in 2010. In 2021, she was shortlisted for the Officine Saffi Award in Milan.
