Karen Lee is a Portland, OR based designer who focuses on materials and object-oriented design. Her work features empathetic and open objects that are simultaneously in a state of being and becoming. Her current body of work engages in objects that redefine their own roles and relationships to the domestic landscape.
Lee leverages both woodworking and vessel making processes to explore new and unexpected forms of communal systems. Because vessels serve as loaded social and cultural objects that typically act as an intermediary between people and space, she questions what happens when their intended use becomes obscured or reconfigured and new communal space or cultural realities are created.
