Maritza Caneca (b. born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Caneca began her career as a visual artist in the 1980’s as a cinematographer and now spends her time between Rio de Janeiro and Miami. She has shown her work all over the world, including an exhibition of her Pool Series curated by Vanda Klabin at Paco Imperial Exhibition during the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The Pool series speaks to the nature of pools and the “ghosts” that once filled them. Employing the various shades of blue, malleability of the water, and artistry of the pool tiles, Caneca conveys the nostalgic sensations that the pools offer. Looking in as an outsider attempting to gain, or regain, access to what the coveted freedom pools represent; attempting to access the immersive sensations of weightlessness and calm, finding movement where there is only static, and a future where there are only memories.

Wasserman Projects is a contemporary art space, established in 2012 and housed in a former firehouse in Detroit’s historic Eastern Market since 2015. Wasserman Projects works with artists from across disciplines and around the world to present exhibitions and performances that will spark a discourse on art, but also cultural, social, or political issues, which are particularly active and timely in Detroit. Guided by a spirit of collaboration, Wasserman Projects seeks to facilitate meaningful visual and performing arts experiences, promote creative and economic growth in our community, and help artists bring to fruition new projects that may not otherwise be possible.
