Self-Portraits

These photos are part of a series reflecting on what happens when I immerse myself in what I do, think about, and create. They started when removing invasive Bittersweet vines from the woods that surround my studio. After a day of working I would close my eyes and all I could see were endless bittersweet vines. I piled them up in my studio and finally sank myself into them and started to take some portraits.
What are the relationships we form with the “other” be it bittersweet, woods, found objects, or discarded waste? It is a relationship I am constantly exploring as illustrated by these “collaborations” between myself and that which surrounds me.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

I am a multi-disciplinary artist. My  work includes painting, installation, and assembled constructions. My work has been shown nationally, with work purchased by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Video Data Bank at the Chicago Art Institute.

Born and raised in California I attended the San Francisco Art Institute and subsequently was an active member, creator, and teacher at the Woman’s Building and Feminist Art Program in Los Angeles. I currently live and work in rural Michigan on a densely wooded property. My work is deeply affected by my relationship with these woods and my environmental concerns.
