Wheat’s work also contains a rich narrative quality, and she often combines myths, cultural symbols, global histories, and images of quotidian life to examine and elevate human experience, focusing in particular on revealing the critical, but often undervalued, work and creative contributions of women.

For her exhibition at Wasserman Projects, Wheat takes inspiration from Detroit’s economic downfall and rebirth. Symbols of excess and consumption pervade the collection of featured paintings and drawings. The exhibition also includes eight porcelain piggy banks, which were produced in Detroit, as well as three mosaic benches—a new medium for Wheat that has allowed her to translate her drawings into three dimensions through the use of colorful stones. Wheat worked with artisans in Detroit to create the benches as well. Together, the artworks in this upcoming show highlight the intricacy of Wheat’s creative processes and dynamic use of color and pattern. Her art practice centers on exalting America’s Black culture. Bowman’s use of vibrant hues, textured paper and acrylic paint illuminates’ narratives that move beyond institutional racism and disparaged perspectives of the Black experience–a view in which America too often limits the full picture. Considering herself a visual griot, she sees her job to tell stories that are reflective of her coming-of-age in Detroit’s Eastside and Black Bottom neighborhoods. Scenes in her vibrant collages depict love, community and a type of fellowship that resides in jazzy nights, the sway of young Black women and the swag of young Black men, church on Sundays followed by family dinner, family outings and cultural dignity and richness.

Bowman’s work appears in private and public collections–nationally and internationally–including the Institutional and Permanent Collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Historical Museum, Mack Alive, Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition, Sarasota, Florida; The Free Press building, Detroit, Michigan; R.W. Think of the work of Robert Rauschenberg or Bob Heineken. But that work was manipulated into being by those artists. My series, Every Thing Changes, relies more on John Cage for its inspiration. It is the result of a happy accident. I realized one day that looking through a newspaper page instead of at the page let me discover a whole world of new images created by the completely unintentional, random and accidental combination of two photographs printed back to back. Unless that combination is recorded it is completely evanescent, because by the next day that newspaper is in recycle. So, every day since, I have saved the paper to look through for the images that I find and use to produce the prints for this work. My form of world-making uses craft traditions as a flexible constraint; I collaborate with materials and colors to achieve a coherence and consistency finely attuned to my intuitive judgment. I look for openings in the making process where I can ply confident imperfections and deviations, subverting fixed expectations of the tradition or technique at hand. I often use bright colors and repeating patterns as a way of injecting each project with evidence of the exuberant aliveness I feel when making art. My practice seeks to alleviate daily doldrums and spiritless ways of living – instead, transforming objects and spaces into paratelic experiences. Made from my own breastmilk, images of my son reference a legacy of classical sculpture and the intimacy of parenthood, and are complemented by still lifes of balanced blocks that serve as a metaphor for our societal ideal of trying to balance our work and home lives to “have it all.” While salt prints display a wide-range of color and tonal discrepancies, their variations here remind us that our bodies are not machines, but imperfect organisms. They are both created using a process called photogrammetry, which uses photographs (in this case from my iPhone) to extract three-dimensional measurements from two-dimensional data. Glitchware is made up of two pieces one is the original glass candlestick that I picked up at the thrift store and the second is its modern digital counterpart, which was 3D printed and cast in crystal. Tchotchke Mirror is a scan of thrift store figurines that I digitally manipulated and remade in solid Ash using a CNC machine. The figurines and original glass candlestick are good representations of the ubiquitous and aura-less objects that we are surrounded by. They are soulless decorative objects acquired at the thrift store, but by applying this process of photogrammetry and shifting from physical to digital back to physical the reproduced object becomes distorted in ways that make it more uniquely formed than the original. This process of transformation and mutation starts to create a complicated web of reflexive relationships between an object and itself that I think is really interesting. It creates a sense of placelessness, a sort of liminal psychological space where memories construct and destruct and reassemble into a new object.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

CCS Woodshop Technician

Madeline is a Furniture Designer-Maker currently based in Detroit. What techniques do you use? What artists or life experiences have influenced your work? You may describe your work overall, or a specific series of work. I am fascinated with African American History. My passion for those who fought to create a better world in their lifetime motivates my art. I created a series of visual documentary artwork, that depicts and narrates the life journey of the subject; with the main portrait in the center painted with fine art materials using acrylic, oil, and pencil. Their background has a collage of documents and pictures that embodies their life that presents a historic narrative. All the piece is covered by thick resin that seals and blends the Artwork. The style recently has attracted prominent persons and organizations.
