Buzzalini primarily uses paint, pencil and crayon in knowingly childish drawings on canvas with heavily worked surfaces of delirious commitment. The end result is what he calls a “painted drawing.” His current conceptual focus is on the American mythology of the Wild West. He has recently made some lamps. Buzzalini received his degree from Wayne State University. Artist Statement This new body of work is inspired by my relationships with local designers, who have influenced and broadened my attraction to objects and forms that bend the conventional rules of taste. The lamps are an extension of my sculptural practice in which I use plaster and cheese cloth to wrap or mummify structural skeletons. Considered both design works and interactive sculptures, this inaugural series is formed in reaction to mid-century modernist aesthetics that have become a staple in contemporary life, critiquing aesthetic homogeneity and proposing modes of living beyond those furnished by Ikea. Materially, the lamps are imperfect. They submit to the idiosyncrasies of their materials rather than impose order on them. This series of works embraces expression over function, intuitive irrationalities, and individual objects … each lamp is unique. The work is not symmetrical, refined or uniform. It is raw, tactile and grotesque, yet elegant in its stillful dance of lighting up the room.

Buzzalini's sculptural works have been featured in numerous group exhibitions and performances, including Friends Of Friends at Wasserman Projects in the fall of 2017.

Artist: Matthew Bennett Laurents
Snouter, 2015
Ceramic
6.25” x 3” x 4.5”

Matthew Bennett Laurents graduated with an MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA in Studio Art from Lewis & Clark College. Drawing on histories of craft and ritual, his work explores the potential of objects as vessels for spiritual and emotional energy. Emphasizing opposing ideas of gradual growth and weathering, my works often present a slow storyline along an almost tectonically scaled timeline - one of quiet, humble, and earnest growth. Methods of stacking convey the timeline of their build and development while being interrupted and imposed upon by their surface. With the surface application, many works display being frozen along their lifespan, as if being both self reflective and viewer reflective of the moment they have been noticed and encapsulated.

This oscillation between past and present is where I believe the works can speak to the notion of being in flux, both in terms of their physicality and the viewer's imprint on them."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0447/4739/1129/products/SWL_No7_1_c75251fd-d1e3-407f-abd6-ddc7337742f8.jpg?v=1604106573
seeker-2015
Seeker

Artist: Matthew Bennett Laurents
Seeker, 2015
Ceramic
6" x 3.75" x 4"

Matthew Bennett Laurents graduated with an MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA in Studio Art from Lewis & Clark College. Drawing on histories of craft and ritual, his work explores the potential of objects as vessels for spiritual and emotional energy.
